Multiplying Movements:
The Key to Reaching the Thirty-One

Movements—such as Luke documented in the book of Acts—are the primary means by which gospel impact outpaces population growth. When God’s Spirit moves, such movements rapidly sweep many households into receiving God’s blessing in Jesus Christ, transforming their communities and their people group.

The essential seed for Jesus movements is a contagious community of believing households within a given people group. Where this seed is not present and growing, people groups tend to believe that Jesus is only for Christians, and to drive those who follow Jesus from their midst. However as believing households witness to and multiply the blessing of God in Jesus, the perspective of a people group can shift to recognizing Jesus as the savior of the whole world, including their own people (John 4:42)!

The central features of all such movements are:

  • the Holy Spirit
  • moving in response to prayer
  • leading whole households in loving obedience to Jesus
  • transforming nations through the blessing of God
  • multiplying contagious communities of blessed households
  • through which the gospel spreads significantly faster than population growth.

Jesus Movements are sometimes known as:
Kingdom Movements
Gospel Movements
Church-Planting Movements (CPM), and
Disciple-Making Movements (DMM).

We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world. (Jn 4:42)

The early believers multiplied in Jesus Movements!

Throughout the book of Acts, God’s Word multiplied rapidly through believing households—without personal Bibles, dedicated church buildings or salaried preachers.

Acts 6:7

And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly …

Acts 9:31

So the church … walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

Acts 12:24

But the word of God increased and multiplied.

Acts 16:5

So the churches … increased in numbers daily.

Acts 19:20

So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

Acts 28:30–31

…, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ … without hindrance.

Jesus Movements are happening again today:

By December 2017

 Nearly 650 such movements had produced about 50 million disciples in rapidly multiplying churches, mostly among Unreached People Groups (UPGs).

By December 2018

More than 700 movements were growing around the world, with a total of about 70 million disciples. Another 3,000 efforts were underway to launch additional movements

2019 and Beyond

Global prayer networks and the 24:14 Coalition are cultivating prayer, collaboration, training and mobilization efforts—all aimed at multiplying these movements further.
