Gospel Movements

Gospel Movements are also commonly known as

  • Kingdom Movements
  • Church-Planting Movements (CPM), and
  • Disciple-Making Movements (DMM).

The central features of all such movements are:

  • the Holy Spirit
  • moving in response to prayer
  • transforming nations through the blessing of God in Jesus
  • multiplying contagious communities of blessed households
  • through which the spread of the gospel outpaces population growth.

Gospel Movements—in Acts and Today

Throughout the book of Acts, God’s Word multiplied rapidly through believing households
—even without personal Bibles, church buildings or salaried preachers.

Acts 6:7

And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly …

Acts 9:31

So the church … walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

Acts 12:24

But the word of God increased and multiplied.

Acts 16:5

So the churches … increased in numbers daily.

Acts 19:20

So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

Acts 28:30–31

…, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ … without hindrance.

Gospel Movements are happening again today:

As of December 2017

Nearly 650 such movements had produced nearly 50 million disciples in rapidly multiplying churches, mostly among Unreached People Groups (UPGs).

December 2018

These figures had swelled to nearly 70 million disciples in 660 movements, no sign of abating amidst strong prayer, collaboration, training and mobilization efforts, all aimed at multiplying these movements further, and 2,900 engagements underway to start additional movements.

About Gospel Movements

Gospel movements, as in Acts, are the primary means by which the growth of Christ’s body has historically outpaced population growth. When God’s Spirit moves, such movements rapidly sweep many households into receiving God’s blessing in Jesus Christ, positively transforming their communities and their people group.

By definition, there are no such movements yet among Frontier People Groups. This prayer guide leads believers in praying for such gospel movements.

The essential seed for all gospel movements is a contagious community of believing households within a people group. As this seed matures through a gospel movement, it shifts the perspective of a people group: from viewing Jesus as only for Christians and expelling believers from their people as traitors, to recognizing Jesus as the savior of the whole world, including their own people (John 4:42)!

Over the past 25 years, gospel movements have begun in more than 650 locations and swept through millions of households among other UPGs. And some of these gospel movements among large UPGs are overflowing to impact many smaller, nearby UPGs.
